Akaihi sushi ROCKS!

Since Akaihi’s opening on January 5th in the HEB shopping center at Louetta and Stuebner Airline, my husband and I have dined twice at the Japanese restaurant. Both times we have been extremely pleased with the wait staff and the sushi has rocked!
We can’t vouch for all of the 50+ sushi rolls available because we haven’t tried them all. But of the sushi rolls we have tried, the Catepillar (eel and avocado) and the Shaggy Dog (Shrimp tempura) are our favorites. The sushi was fresh and the portions were generous making it difficult to eat it all in one bite.
The drinks were reasonably priced with $2 domestic and $3 import beers during Happy Hour. Wine was reasonably priced as well at $5 for a glass of Beringer Chardonnay. The portion wasn’t skimpy as the bartender provided a healthy pour.
We give Akaihi’s a big 2 thumbs up! Give them a try. This is one restaurant we would like to see stay in business.
During Akaihi’s Happy Hour which runs from 3 – 7 pm and is avaiable 7 days a week, numerous sushi selections are $1.50 each and many sushi rolls are discounted 20%. Akaihi is located at 7316 Louetta Rd Spring TX 77379 next to Spec’s.

Best Yogurt

Last year finding a yogurt shop in Spring Texas was near impossible. There were a couple of TCBY yogurt shops but they didn’t make it through the summer. The popular way to cool off was by eating ice cream at Brusters or crunching on a sno-cone at a roadside stand.
If 2010 was the year of ice cream, then 2011 has to be the year of yogurt. As several new yogurt shops have opened up along Louetta including Menchies at 10880 Louetta Road, Orange Leaf at 8220 Louetta Road, and Yogurt Worx at 7316 Louetta Road. All of these yogurt shops are self serve, offer 14 to 16 rotating flavors, and prices are 42¢ or 43¢ per ounce. But the yogurt doesn’t all taste the same.
So which yogurt shop in Spring Texas has the best yogurt? It has to be Yogurt Worx. Their yogurt has a fabulously creamy taste which has you wondering if you are eating soft serve ice cream instead of non-fat yogurt.
Yogurt Worx’s best flavor without a doubt has to be the Root Beer Float. The taste immediately reminded me of the root beer floats I had as a kid at the A&W restaurant. The car hop would bring them to our car in those frosty mugs and they were soooo good.
Now, if they could just make yogurt non-fat and non-calories, I would have it made.

More construction at I45 and Louetta

Panera Bread will be the fourth restaurant to open a store at the busy NW corner of I-45 and Louetta in Spring Texas. As they will soon be the new neighbor of Cheddar’s, Juan & Lefty’s, and Furr’s Fresh Buffet.
Cheddar’s and Juan & Lefty’s are currently open and doing brisk business. While Furr’s Fresh Buffet should not be far behind. If you are wanting to work at Furr’s, here’s your opportunity. They are holding a job fair through April 29th for waitstaff, bar service staff, cooks, and dish room attendants.
When Juan & Lefty’s and Furr’s Fresh Buffet were under construction there were no signs announcing their arrival. They kept us guessing until their signs were installed on the buildings.
Panera Bread on the other hand have annouced their arrival with a coming soon sign even before their foundation’s slab has been poured. Soon can not be soon enough for me as I love Panera Bread’s soup, sandwiches, and the Macaroni and Cheese that brings back fond childhood memories.

Best place to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day when everyone gets to be from Ireland and wear “Kiss Me. I’m Irish” buttons. So where’s the best place in the Spring Texas area to drink green beer and celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? Our choice is the Goose’s Acre on the Woodlands Waterway.
The Goose’s Acre Irish Pub was originally located on Main Street in Middleton, County Cork, Ireland. In 2005, the pub closed its doors to make way for new development. Brian Young and Colm O’Neil purchased the pub’s contents, shipped it across the Atlantic Ocean and recreated the pub in the Woodlands.
The Goose’s Acre will be celebrating St. Patrick’s Day with live music starting at 11 am that will continue until the wee hours of the morning, shot block, bag-pipers, Irish dancers and with plenty of corned beef and green beer.
The only thing missing will be the green water. If they can dye the Chicago river green to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, then why not dye the Woodlands Waterway green.

Most missed restaurants

Restaurants, we all have our favorites. What makes a restaurant our favorite may be a combination of its food, service, and prices or it may simply be because the food is just darn good.
Whenever I have an opportunity to catch up with clients who moved away from Sring Texas, I like to ask them “What restaurants in Spring Texas do you miss the most?”
The answer I frequently recieve is Pappasito’s and Chick-fil-A.
There are Mexican and Chicken restaurants in the cities my clients are now living in so the reason Pappasito’s and Chick-fil-A are chosen is not because of the type of food they serve. Instead they are missed most because other restaurants have not been able to duplicate the level of service, atmosphere, and most definitely the quality of food offerred at Pappasito’s and Chick-fil-A.
When you return to Spring Texas after a long business trip or from vacation, what restaurants do you want to visit first?

Construction at I45 and Louetta

The Northwest corner of the I45 and Louetta intersection continues to experience further development.
First on the scene was the Cheddars restaurant which opened in May of 2009. This particular Cheddars location seems to be perpetually busy and is rumored to be the highest grossing Cheddar’s restaurant in the U.S.
In September of 2010, construction began on a 7,500 sqft Juan & Lefty’s Mexican Cantina. The cantina is located to the west of Cheddars. The walls are up and the roof is on but the Grand Opening looks to be several months away.
In December of 2010, construction began on a 2.4 acre parcel of land located to the North of Cheddars. A new Furr’s Fresh Buffetis planned for the site. Furr’s has been in business for nearly 60 years providing home-style favorites at reasonable prices.
With estimations of nearly 58,000 households located within 5 miles of the I45 and Louetta intersection, it’s easy to understand why this plat of land has become a popular site for restaurant development.

Best patios for outdoor dining in Spring Texas

With low humidity and evening temperatures in the mid 60s, its the ideal time to get out and discover the best patios for outdoor dining in the Spring Texas area.
Below are some of our personal favorites for dining al fresco:
Located in the Willowbrook Mall area, Pappadeaux’s has an outdoor patio that will have you thinking you have been magically transported to New Orleans. The courtyard is reminiscent of the hidden courtyards you would discover tucked off of Bourbon Street with a brick patio and brick walls, fountain, and lush greenery.
Vintage Park - The best patios are located in Vintage Park’s Piazza and have views of the fountains. Although there are several other restaurants with patios in the Piazza our favorites are Peli Peli, Brix Wine Cellars, and Mia Bella. Their views of the fountains along with comfortable table and chairs make them our favorites. Peli Peli and Brix Wine Cellars have Happy Hour specials that can be enjoyed from their patios. Listen to live music in the Piazza from 7 – 10 pm on Thursdays and Fridays during the months of September – November.
Market Street in the Woodlands is another popular spot for dining outdoors. Tommy Bahamas and Jaspers have the best view of central park. Find out when the free concerts are scheduled for central park at the Market Street in the Woodlands events calendar.
There are several great outdoor dining spots along the Woodlands Waterway. Two of our favorite patios belong to the Goose’s Acre and the Marriott. Both have wonderful views of the waterway and are great spots for a relaxing evening.
