Written by Jill Wente on October 24th, 2007 categories: Events and Activities, Shopping | 37 views
Its that time of year again! Time for the Houston Ballet’s annual Nutcracker Market and the kick off of the Holiday season. The Nutcracker Market, which is being held at Reliant Center, is a shopping extravaganza. It boasts over 300 merchants offering unique items of home decor, gourmet food items, toys, decorations, accessories and much, much more.
Last year over 66,000 people attended the Nutcracker Market. But don’t worry there is still room for you to attend. Over the years, I have seen some fabulous items that their owners have told me they were purchased at the Nutcracker Market. There are reports that some of the gourmet food items are so popular that the vendor’s entire stock has been depleted in the first day of the event.
The Nutcracker Market has a long history dating back to its inception in 1981. Since then the Nutcracker Market has contributed over $24 million to the Houston Ballet Foundation to support its scholarship programs. The Nutcracker Market is such a fun way to support the Arts.
The Nutcracker Market runs from 10 am to 8 pm on November 8th and 9th and from 10 am to 6 pm on November 10th and 11th. Admission is $11 at the door. But you can purchase an advance ticket at Randall’s for $10. Reserve a day on your calendar for a visit to the Nutcracker Market in Houston. You are sure to find a unique item that you will treasure for years to come!

Spring Texas receives a property tax rate DECREASE!
Written by Jill Wente on October 11th, 2007 categories: Property Taxes | 317 views
I must say that just writing the words Property Tax Decrease is a little weird. But its true Klein school district in Spring TX approved a 32 cent property tax rate decrease from the 2006 rate for 2007.
Now 32 cents may not sound like a lot, but with the median home price of $160,000 in Spring TX it amounts to $512.00 a year.
These are the savings that Spring TX homeowners were promised by the State Legislation as a result of the School Finance Reform Law that was passed in 2006. The School Finance Reform Law reallocated the share of the burden of school funding between homeowners and the state for the state to pick up a larger share. This is the final year for the transition of the school property tax reform as it was to be transitioned in over a two year period that began in 2006.
Enjoy the decrease while you can because Klein school district has launched a bond study process. The study predicts that about 20,000 additional students will fill Klein school rooms in the next 10 years which translates into the need for additional schools to be built.

What is a Texas Basement?
Written by Jill Wente on October 9th, 2007 categories: Home Buyer Information | 47 views
I grew up in the Midwest and in our house we had a basement. I would have to say that our basement’s main purposes of use were storage and as a hang out room for the kids. In the summer, we spent a lot of time in the basement because it was always the coolest room in the house.
Spring Texas homes do not have the typical underground basements because the water table is too high or in other words the soil depth is too thin making it unpractical. So the question begs what do we do for storage space and where in the house do the kids hang out. You will find that a lot of people use at least one bay of their garage for storage. Some homes have what is called a “Texas Basement” which is used for storage. A Texas Basement is floored attic space that is typically accessible via a hallway or closet on the second floor. In some homes, the Texas Basement is accessible via a separate stairways in the garage and the floored attic space is the space above the garage.
As for the space in the house for the kids to hang out, that is the game room. In Spring Texas, we have plenty of homes that have a game room. We do not have as many homes with a Texas Basement, but we are starting to see more Texas Basements or hidden storage rooms in the floor plans of newer construction homes.

What is a Master Planned Community?
Written by Jill Wente on October 6th, 2007 categories: Discover Spring Texas, Home Buyer Information | 353 views
What is a master planned community is a question that I am frequently asked. A master planned community is a large scale development featuring a wide range of housing prices and styles, an array of amenities, and multiple non-residential land uses.
The uses of the land have been planned in advance. In Spring, TX, we have several master planned communities to choose from including the Woodlands, Gleannloch Farms, Windrose, and Spring Lakes.
The Woodlands is one of the largest and most popular master planned communities in the country. The Woodlands was developed in 1974 as a response to the rapid growth of the Houston area. The Woodlands consists of 27,000 acres, six championship and signature golf courses, 100 miles of hike and bike trails, 80 neighborhood parks, a 200 store shopping mall, a waterway complete with water taxis, a 200 acre lake, a 17,000 seat outdoor amphitheater, a resort and conference center with 60,000 square feet of meeting spaces, plus many other amenities.
In its prior life, Gleannloch Farms was an Egyptian Arabian horse farm. Today its ties to its past can still be found at the Equestrian center. Gleannloch Farms amenities include a 27 hole golf course designed by Jay Riviere, 8.5 miles of trails, three recreation centers, seven parks, 21 acre lakefront complex with a six lane competition pool, tennis courts, baseball and soccer fields, picnic tables, and a boat house where you can rent a kayak for some fun on the water.
Windrose includes over 1,100 acres of forested land and upon complete development 2,000 homes. Windrose’s amenities include a 18 hole championship golf course, a jr. Olympic pool, tennis courts, recreation center, lakes with fountains, numerous winding trails, a volleyball court, and other amenities.
Spring Lakes is a smaller gated master planned community consisting of 250 acres and when fully developed 800 homes. Spring Lakes features three lakes with fountains comprising six acres. Residents enjoy the walking trails, especially the ones that are around the lakes. Additional amenities are a community pool, sand volleyball court, two lighted tennis courts, playground, and picnic tables.
Master planned communities have gained in popularity over the years especially with active families that like to enjoy the outdoors. Due to the extensive array of amenities in most master planned communities your family will be taking their vacation at home just to have the time to enjoy them all. So if you are looking for a master planned community in Spring TX, don’t worry there is bound to be one that will be just right for you.
